Bojana, River delta in Ulcinj Municipality, Montenegro
The Bojana is a river flowing through Albania and Montenegro that forms a delta near Ulcinj before emptying into the Adriatic Sea. At its mouth, salt marshes, reed beds, and flooded forests create a natural transition zone between the river and the sea.
The name originates from ancient Illyrian times and refers to early settlements in the region. The first known map showing the river dates to the late 1600s.
The delta serves as a nesting ground and feeding area for numerous bird species that depend on the varied habitats here. Visitors notice how the landscape shifts with the seasons and the rhythm of tides.
The area is flat and easy to navigate but slippery and marshy in many spots, especially after rain. Bring water shoes or sturdy boots and long trousers to stay comfortable and dry.
The riverbed sits below sea level, which allows salt water to push upstream while fresh water moves toward the sea. This creates a delicate balance between freshwater and saltwater environments.
