Parruca Mosque, Islamic prayer center in Shkodër, Albania
Parruca Mosque is a prayer house in central Shkodër that combines Ottoman design with modern reconstruction. The building stands out with its two vertical minarets and central dome that dominate the surrounding neighborhood.
The original structure was built in 1937, destroyed in 1967 during communist rule, and rebuilt starting in 2006. Its reopening marked the return of active religious practice after decades of suppression.
The mosque accommodates 1300 worshippers and serves as a primary gathering place for the Muslim community of Shkodër for daily prayers and celebrations.
Access is possible but requires appropriate dress and respect for those praying, especially during the five daily prayer times. Visiting in early morning hours or late afternoon is helpful when there is less activity and more opportunity to observe the interior.
The building was revived with its dedication ceremony in 2006 after 39 years of closure. This restoration of the religious site was a symbolic moment for freedom of worship in the city following decades of state restrictions.
