Lake Vau i Dejës, lake in Albania
Lake Vau i Dejës is a large reservoir in northern Albania created by damming the Drin river, with clear water that winds through narrow mountain passes. Steep slopes covered in pine forest and shrubs border the water, with tall mountains rising directly from the shoreline and reflecting in the calm surface.
The reservoir was created in 1971 when a dam was built on the Drin river for electricity production and water management. The island of Shurdhah within the lake was once the medieval settlement of Sardis and bears traces of three distinct cultural groups that shaped the region.
The lake is connected to rural life in northern Albania, where local families traditionally come to fish and spend time together. Visitors can share homemade meals in nearby villages, experiencing everyday practices that reflect the region's simple way of living.
The lake is easily accessible from the city of Shkodra and works well as a day trip; wear comfortable shoes and bring what you need for a day outdoors. Boat rides typically take about an hour, and the best time to visit is during good weather when swimming spots are accessible and picnicking is pleasant.
The island of Shurdhah within the lake contains ruins of the ancient Illyrian town of Sarda, where visitors can walk among old stone walls and learn about its past importance for regional trade and culture. Local guides share stories that help bring the site to life.
