Korab, Mountain summit and viewpoint in eastern Albania
Korab is a mountain forming a natural border between Albania and North Macedonia, marked by steep rock walls and jagged formations. Its position and height make it a prominent landmark in the regional mountain range.
The mountain took its current form during the Paleozoic era through geological processes that layered shale, sandstone, dolomite, and limestone. These rock types create the distinctive structure visible on the peak and slopes today.
Shepherds in the region have grazed their flocks on the southeastern meadows for generations, shaping how the landscape looks today. This way of life remains visible in the seasonal movements across the high grasslands.
Climbing from the North Macedonian side requires a permit and passport presentation at border checkpoints, while the Albanian route needs no formal permits. Weather conditions can change quickly at this elevation, so plan accordingly and check conditions before going.
In the upper Dlaboka River valley, waterfalls plunge down 130 meters, making them the highest in North Macedonia. They flow most powerfully in spring when snowmelt feeds them from higher elevations.
