Pelion, Ancient fortified settlement in Dassaretis, Albania
Pelion is an ancient fortified settlement in the Dassaretis region of southeastern Albania. The surviving dry-stone walls follow the natural contours of the hillside and once controlled a key mountain passage.
The settlement took shape during a period when Illyrian tribes and the Macedonian kingdom competed for control of the region's mountain routes. In the 4th century BCE, the area was drawn into a major military conflict that permanently shifted the political boundaries of the region.
The name Pelion connects the site to the ancient Greek world, and the remains show a mix of Illyrian and Macedonian building styles. Visitors can read this layered heritage directly in the stonework, where different construction methods appear side by side.
The site sits in rough mountain terrain, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are needed. Because the exact position of the ancient settlement is still debated by researchers, asking locally before setting out is a good idea.
Although the name Pelion calls to mind the well-known mountain range in Greece, this is a completely separate site in Albania, a confusion that has occasionally misled researchers. This shared name is one reason the Albanian site went unnoticed in general archaeological literature for a long time.
