Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Labovë e Kryqit

The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos is a Byzantine structure featuring a circular dome and distinctive herringbone patterns on its exterior stone walls. Inside, an unusual triple passage connects the central aisle to the side aisles, creating a different layout than typical Orthodox churches.

The building dates to the early 10th century and ranks among the oldest religious structures in the Gjirokastër District. It survived multiple periods of historical upheaval throughout the region over subsequent centuries.

The church served as a gathering place where the local community practiced devotion to sacred images and Orthodox rituals. Its design and decoration reflect the Eastern Christian traditions that shaped religious life in this mountain village.

The site remains in active religious use and welcomes both worshippers and visitors interested in Byzantine architecture. Walking around the village to view the building from different angles gives the best sense of its proportions and construction details.

During the 20th century, the church housed a precious sacred relic and a venerated icon that drew devotion from the surrounding area. These treasures were removed as religious practice in the region underwent dramatic shifts.
