Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, Labovë e Kryqit, Byzantine church in Labovë e Kryqit, Albania

The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, known locally as Kisha e Shën Mërisë, stands in Labovë e Kryqit, Gjirokastër County. Its tall central dome, the oldest circular dome recorded in Epirus, rises above a cross-shaped plan of nave and aisles, entered through a later narthex. A triple passage links the central aisle to the side aisles, and the exterior combines brick and stone in a fishbone pattern.

Justinian I founded the church in the 6th century (527–565) in memory of his mother; the present building is dated to the 10th century by one source and to the 13th century, under the Despotate of Epirus, by another. It kept a fragment of the True Cross given by a Byzantine emperor, and until 1967 the Dormition feast drew a procession with the relic and the Labovitissa icon to neighbouring villages. Religious activity was banned in 1967 and the relic disappeared in 1989.

Until 1967, the church was a pilgrimage destination for Orthodox communities of the surrounding area. Each year on the Dormition of the Mother of God, a procession carried the fragment of the True Cross and the Virgin Labovitissa icon to neighbouring villages. Religious activity was banned in 1967 under the atheistic policies of the People's Republic of Albania; attempts to revive the festivities have had limited success.

The site remains in active religious use and welcomes both worshippers and visitors interested in Byzantine architecture. Walking around the village to view the building from different angles gives the best sense of its proportions and construction details.

The church kept a fragment of the True Cross, donated by a Byzantine emperor, and the miracle-working icon of the Virgin Labovitissa. Until 1967 a procession carried both to neighbouring villages each year on the Dormition feast. The relic disappeared in 1989; Albanian press reports claimed Enver Hoxha's daughter took it.
