Margëlliç Castle, Medieval fortress in Patos municipality, Albania
Margëlliç Castle is a stone fortress built on a hilltop in western Albania's Fier region with views over the surrounding lands. The fortification covers the ridge with multiple walls and structures that show different construction periods.
The fortress was built during Byzantine times and formed an important defense point for the ancient city of Byllis. It was rebuilt several times and served different rulers controlling the region.
The fortress served for centuries as a stronghold under different rulers, and its stones reflect the history of multiple empires. Today, visitors can still see the different building styles at the walls that show how construction methods changed over time.
Access is via the marked path from Margëlliç village, which is easy to find. The ruins are open during daylight hours year-round, but sturdy footwear is recommended as the climb is steep.
The fortress became the site of a fierce battle during World War II between Albanian Partisans and German forces. Resistance fighter Lefter Talo died here and is still remembered by locals today.
