Dimale, Archaeological site in Krotinë, Albania
Dimale is an ancient settlement in Albania situated on a hillside at roughly 450 meters elevation, surrounded by substantial fortification walls. The location contains visible remains of residential and administrative buildings that were occupied from the 4th to 1st centuries BC.
The settlement started as an Illyrian center and gained fortified structures during the 4th century BC. Later, Greek building styles were added, shaping the town's appearance through its final days in the late ancient period.
The remains show how Greek building styles were woven into the local settlement, with inhabitants using theaters, temples, and covered halls as part of daily life. These structures reveal how different cultures could coexist and build together at this location.
The site is located in hilly terrain and can be explored on foot, with sturdy shoes recommended due to uneven ground. The paths between the ruins are not consistently marked, so it helps to learn about the layout beforehand.
Stamped roof tiles bearing the inscription DIMALLITAN were discovered during excavation and helped archaeologists confirm this location as the ancient city of Dimale. These tiles remain among the most important pieces of evidence for the site's identity.
