Lmbatavank

Lmbatavank is a monastery on a hillside near Artik with a cross-domed church, rectangular wings, and a horseshoe-shaped nave. The structure combines typical Armenian architectural elements with carefully proportioned forms that define its appearance.

The monastery was founded around 700 and underwent major rebuilding in the 10th century that reinforced the octagonal dome structure. These renovations show how the community maintained the building over generations.

The monastery walls display inscriptions and carvings from the 12th and 13th centuries that record donations from surrounding villages. Visitors can study these details and see the connection between the sanctuary and the communities of the region.

The monastery sits 2 kilometers southwest of Artik in the Shirak region on an elevated position with clear paths to the grounds. The location offers good conditions for exploration and photography with open views of the surrounding landscape.

Archaeological excavations from 1953 uncovered ancient khachkar pedestals, graves from the 7th to 13th centuries, and metal artifacts across the grounds. These discoveries reveal a long history of use and veneration at this location spanning multiple periods.
