Russian 102nd Military Base, Military base in Gyumri, Armenia
The Russian 102nd Military Base is a permanent garrison in the Armenian city of Gyumri near the Turkish border. The facility includes barracks, training grounds, and staging areas for armored vehicles as well as a runway for military transport aircraft.
The unit originated during World War II as a Soviet division and was retained as a Russian base on Armenian soil after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The current configuration and designation as the 102nd Base was established following reorganization of Russian military forces in the 1990s.
The installation operates under the command of Russia's Southern Military District based in Rostov-on-Don and is maintained through bilateral treaties between Armenia and Russia valid through 2044. Armenian conscripts may serve within the facility to fulfill their national military service obligations.
The base is not accessible to civilians and sits several kilometers outside Gyumri city center in an area enclosed by fencing and checkpoints. Visible military activity is generally limited to occasional vehicle movements on supply roads and aircraft taking off or landing at the airfield.
The base sits on land that served as a caravan rest stop on the trade route between Persia and Constantinople during the Ottoman Empire. The armored vehicles of the unit use a two-digit numbering system on their turrets identifying their affiliation with the 102nd Base.
