Yerevan Lake, body of water
Yerevan Lake is a reservoir on the Hrazdan River in Armenia's capital city. It was created in the mid-1960s by building a dam and now serves water management needs while moderating the local climate through its presence.
The lake was built in the mid-1960s on the former site of a village called Nor Koghb. A notable 1976 event saw a trolleybus plunge into the water, and a swimmer named Shavarsh Karapetyan rescued multiple people nearby.
The lake sits about 7.5 kilometers from the city center and is easy to reach while offering a quiet retreat near the urban area. Water rarely freezes, making visits possible year-round, with the warmest months stretching from March through late autumn.
Beneath the water surface lie the remains of the former village of Nor Koghb, including an old bridge that occasionally becomes visible when water levels drop. Archaeologists found obsidian tools in caves along the shoreline dating back hundreds of thousands of years to the Paleolithic age.
