Lubango

Lubango is the provincial capital of Huíla in southern Angola, positioned in the Serra da Chela mountains. The city sits at about 1700 meters elevation, which gives it a noticeably cooler climate compared to most other Angolan regions.

Portuguese settlers from Madeira island founded the city in the 1800s under the name Sá da Bandeira, and it was renamed after independence. Several colonial-era buildings still stand today and form part of the city's architectural character.

The Nyaneka-Humbe and Ovambo communities share their traditions at local markets where craftspeople sell carved sculptures and traditional textiles. You can see these artisans working and observe how these skills remain part of everyday life in the city.

The airport with regular service is the main way to reach the city from other parts of Angola. Blue and white minibuses operate throughout town for local travel, though the city center is walkable and suits exploration on foot.

The nearby Serra da Leba mountain pass features around 56 sharp curves that wind through dramatic terrain. Travelers often make the drive just to experience these winding roads and the views across the landscape.
