Okavango River, River system in central Angola.

The Okavango is a river system that flows southeastward from central Angola through Namibia into northern Botswana, carrying fresh water across southern Africa. The waterway moves through an extensive network of channels and waterways that shift with the seasons.

The river system was first documented by European explorers in the 19th century, which led to the development of new routes across the region. These early expeditions provided crucial information about the geography of southern Africa.

Multiple ethnic groups living along the banks maintain traditional fishing and farming practices that have adapted to seasonal water changes over generations. They depend on the river's annual flooding patterns to sustain their way of life.

The river reaches its highest water levels between June and August, making travel and exploration more predictable during these months. In other seasons, parts of the system may be harder to access and require careful planning.

Unlike most rivers that flow to the ocean, this river system terminates in a large inland delta within the Kalahari Desert. This creates a vast wetland that completely changes the landscape and attracts millions of animals.
