Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo, Natural rock formation in Cacuso, Angola
The Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo consists of extensive monolithic rock formations rising from the savanna landscape of Malanje Province.
Portuguese forces captured this strategic location in 1671, constructing a fortress after defeating the Kingdom of Ndongo through a prolonged siege.
According to regional narratives, the rocks contain carved footprints attributed to Queen Ana de Sousa Ginga, who ruled the Kingdom of Ndongo.
The formation stands 116 kilometers from Malanje city and requires access via the national road connecting Luanda to Saurimo.
The rock formation divides into four distinct subsystems - Western, South, North, and Southeast, with the Western section receiving the most visitors.
