Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary
Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary, Nature reserve in Lo Barnechea, Chile.
Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary is a protected area in the Andes above Lo Barnechea, featuring snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and a distinctive creek flowing through steep terrain. The land rises from lower valleys into higher mountain zones, each with its own landscape and plant life.
The area has been used by humans for thousands of years, with archaeological remains showing early settlement. The highest mountain within its borders held sacred meaning for the Inca, who performed rituals at the summit.
The Plomo Mountain within the sanctuary held significant religious importance for the Inca civilization, leading to ceremonial offerings at its summit.
The area is accessible via marked trails where hikers and climbers can explore various routes at different difficulty levels. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and rough terrain, especially at higher elevations.
The creek turns red during warmer months due to natural minerals dissolved in the water. This striking color comes from iron salts and other compounds that seep from the rock and soil.
