Chimboya

Chimboya is a mountain peak in the La Raya range that rises to approximately 5,500 meters and contains mineral deposits including sphalerite, pyrite, and quartz. The peak displays typical high-altitude Andean characteristics with steep slopes and exposed rock formations.

This peak has served as a natural boundary between highland regions for centuries and played a role in geographic organization under Inka rule. Its location and visibility made it a reference point for ancient trade routes and settlement patterns across the territory.

Local people maintain a deep relationship with this mountain, weaving traditional knowledge into their farming and daily practices in the region. Visitors can sense this connection through the careful management of nearby agricultural lands and the names that communities have given to different parts of the area.

Visitors should plan several days for altitude acclimatization since temperatures drop dramatically at this elevation and weather conditions can change unexpectedly. The area requires appropriate gear and physical conditioning before attempting any summit climb.

The peak's position northeast of La Raya Pass creates different patterns of snow accumulation on each face of the mountain throughout the seasons. This effect produces dramatically different landscapes from day to day as weather conditions shift.
