Estadio Garcilaso, football stadium
Estadio Garcilaso is a large soccer venue in Cusco that serves as home to local teams including Cienciano and other clubs from Peru's top league. The stadium has a well-maintained grass field and modern facilities that can accommodate over 42,000 spectators.
The stadium opened in 1958 with an initial capacity of around 30,000 seats, expanding over the decades as the city grew. In 2004 it underwent renovation and expansion to prepare for the Copa America tournament.
The stadium is named after Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, a significant historical figure of mixed Inca and Spanish heritage from the region. His name connects the place to local roots and reminds visitors of the area's cultural past.
The stadium is easily accessible from central Cusco, either on foot or by taxi that drops you at the main entrance. Food and drink vendors operate around the venue, where visitors can relax and socialize before and after matches.
The stadium hosted a third-place match during the 2004 Copa America where Uruguay faced Colombia. That tournament brought international attention to Cusco and drew many visitors to the region.
