Chumpe, Mountain summit in Marcapata District, Peru.
Chumpe is a mountain peak in the Vilcanota range, standing at roughly 6100 meters. The mountain has steep slopes and sits north of Lake Sibinacocha, with several possible climbing routes on different sides.
The peak served as a natural landmark for people in the region long before Marcapata District was established in 1869. Such prominent mountains played a practical role in how local communities organized and understood their territory.
The name comes from Quechua, the language spoken by local communities in this region. People here have long used such peaks as reference points when moving through the mountains.
The summit requires high-altitude mountaineering experience and should only be attempted with local guides, ideally during drier months. Visitors should expect unpredictable weather and demanding terrain.
The northern route offers technical climbing through interesting rock formations, while the other sides present completely different challenges. Each route shapes the climbing experience in its own way.
