Villa El Salvador District, Administrative district in southern Lima, Peru.
Villa El Salvador District is an administrative area in southern Lima province, Peru, situated roughly 30 kilometers from the city center near the Pacific coast. The territory covers a flat coastal plain where residential neighborhoods and commercial areas spread across several square kilometers, organized along wide streets and public squares.
In the early 1970s, families from the Andean highlands arrived here and founded initial settlements on vacant land south of Lima. This community gained formal recognition as an independent district in 1983 and developed a collective model of urban planning.
The district received the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord in 1987 for its community organization and social advancement through collective initiatives.
Most main roads in this district are easy to navigate, and public transport links the area to other parts of Lima. Visitors interested in exploring daily life in a self-managed neighborhood will find local markets and community centers open throughout the day.
This district received the Spanish Princess of Asturias Award for Concord in 1987, recognizing the community model built by its residents. The international jury at the time praised the collective organization and shared commitment to social development.
