Otishi National Park

Otishi National Park is a large protected area spanning mountain ranges, grasslands, and forests across different elevations in the Andes. The terrain changes from lower tropical zones to high mountain regions, creating distinct ecosystems at each level.

The Peruvian government created this protected area in 2003 after decades of conservation work. These efforts had started decades earlier when preserving the region first became a priority.

The park sits alongside lands where Asháninka and Machiguenga people have lived for generations, maintaining their traditional ways of life. Their presence shapes how the region is cared for and respected today.

Visit between April and October when rainfall is lower and hiking conditions improve across the mountainous terrain. These months offer the most favorable weather for exploring the park on foot.

The area serves as a refuge for rare bird species and mountain bears that have few other places to survive. It also shelters many orchid varieties and plants found nowhere else.
