Caverna de Quiocta, Limestone cave near Lámud, Peru

Caverna de Quiocta is a limestone cave in the Amazonian Andes stretching approximately 545 meters horizontally with multiple interconnected passages. The cave contains various mineral formations including stalactites and stalagmites, all shaped gradually by underground water flow over millions of years.

The cave held significance for the Chachapoyas people in ancient times, who left behind tools and pottery within its passages. The Peruvian government recognized its archaeological value in 2003, designating it as a National Cultural Heritage site.

The cave served as a sacred place for the Chachapoyas people, who performed rituals here and left behind objects that visitors can observe today. The rock paintings and artifacts reveal how ancient communities integrated this underground space into their spiritual practices.

Visitors should bring sturdy boots, warm clothing, and a flashlight since the pathways can be slippery and temperatures stay cool inside. A local guide is required and helps navigate safely through the various corridors and chambers.

Water flowing through the cave has naturally sculpted forms that locals have named the spear, the wishing fountain, and the chief watching the princess. These informal names reflect how visitors perceive and connect with the rock formations they encounter.
