Conjunto monumental de Belén

The complex consists of a baroque church with an elaborate carved stone facade, two former hospitals, and a cemetery occupying half a city block. The buildings form a connected ensemble with courtyards and linked interior spaces.

Construction of the religious complex began in 1699 with the men's hospital, followed by the church, which took fifty years to complete. The buildings were erected according to plan during the period of Spanish colonial rule.

The chapel displays carved polychrome figures of angels and warriors created by indigenous artisans. These works show the distinctive style of local craftspeople who brought their own vision to colonial religious art.

The site can be visited on most weekdays and offers straightforward pedestrian access from the street. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and allow adequate time to explore all areas thoroughly.

The cupola is supported by eight painted cherubs created by indigenous artists. This rare blend of European architectural design and native artistic craftsmanship makes the structure distinctive.
