Private Conservation Area Chaparrí

The reserve spans 34,000 hectares of mountainous terrain and dry forest environments, providing habitats for numerous animal and plant species in northern Peru.

The Santa Catalina de Chongoyape community established Chaparrí in 2001 as Peru's first Private Conservation Area, setting a precedent for community-managed natural reserves.

The mountain Cerro Chaparrí maintains deep spiritual importance among Peruvian shamans, continuing traditions that date back to the ancient Mochica civilization.

Visitors reach the reserve via a 90-minute drive from Chiclayo to Chongoyape, followed by a 16-kilometer journey through challenging terrain to the conservation area.

The reserve houses rehabilitation facilities for endangered spectacled bears and white-winged guans, allowing visitors to observe these rare species in semi-captivity.
