Ichigkat muja - Cordillera del Cóndor National Park, Mountain national park in Province of Condorcanqui, Peru
Ichigkat muja is a mountain national park spanning the border region between Peru and Ecuador in the northern Andes. The terrain features steep valleys carved by rivers that support the diverse wildlife and plant communities across multiple elevation zones.
The park was established in 2007 following a peace agreement that settled long-standing boundary disputes between the two nations. This created the opportunity for both countries to collaborate on protecting this remote mountain region.
The Shuar indigenous communities maintain their ancestral territories within the park boundaries, participating in conservation planning and resource management decisions.
Access requires flying in or taking a multi-day river journey, as roads do not reach this remote location. Visitors should expect limited facilities and variable weather, particularly heavy rainfall in the wetter months.
The area holds an exceptional concentration of rare plant species, many still unknown to science. This botanical richness results from the unique topography that creates multiple climate zones within a compact space.
