Alto Amazonas Province
Alto Amazonas Province, Administrative province in Loreto, Peru
Alto Amazonas Province spans 18,764 square kilometers of tropical territory, bordered by the Huallaga River and intersected by numerous waterways and forests.
The province gained its administrative status on February 7, 1866, with Yurimaguas established as its capital following Father Samuel Fritz's protection of indigenous peoples.
The region maintains active indigenous communities, including Chayahuita and Awajun groups, who preserve traditional practices through local festivals and ceremonies.
Transportation within Alto Amazonas relies primarily on river routes through the Huallaga River network, connecting communities and facilitating trade between settlements.
The province contains six distinct districts, each characterized by different ecological zones ranging from lowland rainforests to higher elevation territories near San Martin.
