Castillo de Lamas, Medieval-style castle in Lamas, Peru
The Castillo de Lamas is a medieval-style stone fortress in the San Martin region, featuring towers and thick walls that stand against the backdrop of green hills and tropical forest. Inside, five levels contain dining areas, living spaces, and viewing points that offer looks across the surrounding landscape.
Italian architect Nicola Felice designed and built this structure in 2005 following an earthquake that caused significant damage to the Lamas community. The project was born from a desire to create a new landmark for the region.
Inside, murals by local artist Geens Archentti blend European design with Peruvian artistic traditions. The walls tell a story of two cultures meeting in one structure.
The castle sits approximately 22 kilometers from Tarapoto and opens from 9 AM onward. Moving between the five levels involves climbing stairs, so wear sturdy shoes and arrive ready for some physical activity.
The castle's foundation incorporates a natural rock formation that was integrated into the construction itself rather than removed. This blend of built structure and natural geology creates something rarely seen in Amazon architecture.
