Punta Loma, Natural reserve on the Nuevo Gulf coast near Puerto Madryn, Argentina.
Punta Loma is a nature reserve on the coast of Nuevo Gulf near Puerto Madryn with medium-sized cliffs that overlook pebble beaches. South American sea lions gather in colonies near the shoreline where visitors can watch them from designated areas.
The area was declared a protected reserve in 1967 as the first of its kind in Chubut province. This designation marked the start of organized conservation efforts for the region's marine life and ecosystems.
The reserve serves as a place where visitors learn about marine life and Patagonian wildlife by watching from observation points. Local guides help people understand the animals and their habitats through direct observation.
Visitors can reach the reserve by taking Brown Boulevard southeast from Puerto Madryn and turning onto Provincial Route 1 toward the coast. Arriving in the morning offers better conditions for observing the animals and exploring the paths along the cliffs.
The male sea lions in the colony weigh around 350 kilograms and establish their territories each November in fierce competitions. During this season, the dominant males gather multiple females around them, creating a remarkable natural display.
