Isla de los Pájaros, Nature reserve island in Chubut, Argentina.
Isla de los Pájaros is a small landmass in San Jose Gulf that measures roughly 170 by 75 meters (558 by 246 feet). The area connects to the mainland during low tide and provides nesting grounds for various seabirds.
Spanish colonists built Fort San Jose with a chapel on the site in 1779. Local peoples later destroyed the structure in 1810 during an attack.
The site draws different seabird species that gather here during breeding season. You can watch penguins, cormorants, and other coastal birds as you move through the area.
You can best visit the interpretation center about 3 kilometers from the Ameghino Isthmus Visitor Center to learn about the island and its birds. From there you can use binoculars to watch the animals from a safe distance.
During each tidal cycle, the site transforms from an island to a peninsula and temporarily creates paths for crabs and marine life. This constant shift between isolated and connected makes each visit a different experience depending on the tide.
