Salón San David, Cultural center in Trelew, Argentina.
Salón San David is a cultural center in Trelew designed with a facade inspired by a church from Pembrokeshire, Wales. The building houses gathering spaces where the Welsh community meets for events and social activities throughout the year.
The building opened in 1915 to mark the 50th anniversary of Welsh settlement in the region. Construction had begun years before with a cornerstone ceremony in 1910.
The building is named for Wales' patron saint and serves as a gathering place where the local Welsh community celebrates its heritage through performances and events. Eisteddfods held here feature music, dance, and poetry that connect people to their ancestral traditions.
The building is located between San Martín and Belgrano streets in the city center, making it easy to find. The roof features three large decorative elements that are distinctive from a distance.
The roof is crowned by three large artistic zinc structures shaped like hats, giving the building a distinctive look. A major renovation in 1958 included installation of granite mosaic flooring that remains visible today.
