Nicolás Avellaneda Transporter Bridge, Transporter bridge in La Boca, Argentina.
The Nicolás Avellaneda is a metal transporter bridge that crosses the Riachuelo River, connecting La Boca in Buenos Aires to Isla Maciel in Avellaneda. A suspended gondola carries people from one bank to the other.
The Ferrocarril del Sud railway company built the bridge, which opened in 1914. It was built mainly to transport workers who commuted daily between the two areas.
The bridge appears in paintings, photographs, and films as a symbol of Buenos Aires' industrial waterfront heritage. It has become a familiar image in local art and the city's visual memory.
After renovation work, the bridge is now open to visitors and offers views of the river and surrounding area. You can walk across or ride the gondola to experience the structure and waterscape up close.
This is one of the few remaining bridges of its kind in the world and the only one still standing in South America. Its early 20th-century engineering represents a rare example of this particular bridge technology.
