Zoológico de Florencio Varela, Zoo in Florencio Varela, Argentina
Zoológico de Florencio Varela was a six-hectare facility in Buenos Aires Province that housed more than 120 animal species alongside ornamental plants and pathways. The collection included mammals, birds, and reptiles from various regions.
The facility opened in 1995 and developed into a center with multiple conservation initiatives across the region. It worked with international organizations such as ARTIS ZOO Amsterdam until it permanently closed in 2014.
The facility offered educational programs for local schools, with guided tours and environmental education activities focused on regional biodiversity appreciation.
Visitors should prepare for a large site that requires comfortable shoes and rest stops in shaded areas. Early morning visits work well because the animals are more active and the heat is less intense.
In 2007, the zoo experienced a notable incident involving a giant anteater, which led to investigations and changes in administrative procedures.
