Monumental Stadium, Football stadium in Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Mas Monumental Stadium is a football arena in the Núñez neighborhood of Buenos Aires and the largest sports venue in Argentina with a capacity of 84,567 seats. The concrete and steel construction extends across multiple levels with stands that wrap around the entire pitch.
The arena opened on May 26, 1938, and developed into a major setting for Argentine football. It later hosted the 1978 World Cup final, where Argentina claimed the title.
River Plate's nickname, "Millonarios", comes from the 1930s when the club paid large fees for players; the stadium's Sívori stand follows the curve of Daniel White's 19th-century racecourse, whose track once ran here. The 1978 World Cup final was played in this bowl before 71,000 people.
The grounds sit near bus routes and the metro station, making access relatively simple. Visitors find food options, restrooms and a museum dedicated to the club's history available to explore on site.
The construction was financed through revenue from the sale of player Enrique Omar Sívori to Juventus in 1957. This transfer allowed the completion of the work and made the project financially possible.
