El Solar de la Abadía, Shopping center in Las Cañitas district, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
El Solar de la Abadía is a shopping center in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, spread across three floors with dozens of stores and retail stands. The offer covers clothing, home goods, and a range of other everyday products.
The building opened in 1995 after a former carbon dioxide factory on the site was converted. The renovation was designed by the BMA architectural studio.
El Solar de la Abadía sits in one of the most active parts of Palermo, where local shops and recognized brands share the same space. Neighborhood residents use it for everyday shopping, which gives the place a more local feel than a typical commercial center.
The center has underground parking, which makes it easy to visit by car. Several bus lines stop nearby, so getting there without a car is also straightforward.
The International Council of Shopping Centers gave the complex a design award in 1997 at a ceremony held in Las Vegas. This recognition brought international attention to what is, at its core, a neighborhood-scale commercial building.
