Falucho, Bronze monument in Palermo, Argentina
Falucho is a stone and bronze statue in Palermo that stands at the intersection of Santa Fe Avenue and Luis Maria Campos Avenue. The sculpture depicts a standing human figure in an upright posture and occupies a prominent position on the small Plazoleta Falucho, which connects three major streets.
Sculptor Lucio Correa Morales created this monument in 1897, dedicating it to Antonio Ruiz, a soldier who died during the Callao uprising. This work marked an important moment in recognizing soldiers of Afro-Argentine origin within the nation's historical narrative.
The monument honors Afro-Argentine soldiers who fought in the independence wars, recognizing their often-overlooked role in the nation's history. The figure of Antonio Ruiz represents the courage of these fighters whose contributions were long forgotten by society.
The monument sits on a small plaza that is easily reached on foot and served by several bus stops nearby. The site is open during daylight hours and free to visit, so you can stop by anytime to view the statue.
The monument was the first large-scale work entirely designed and cast in Argentine workshops, created by an Argentine artist working entirely with local resources. This locally produced sculpture marks a milestone in the development of Argentine sculpture tradition and metalwork craftsmanship.
