Teatro Broadway, Performance venue near Obelisk in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Teatro Broadway is a theatre on Avenida Corrientes in downtown Buenos Aires, Argentina, built to host stage performances of all kinds. It features a large main hall with a classical facade from the late 1920s, still used today for drama and music productions.
The theater opened in 1929 as a cinema-theatre hybrid and was from the start one of the most recognized venues on Avenida Corrientes. Over the decades it shifted away from cinema toward live theatre as audience tastes changed.
Avenida Corrientes, where the theater stands, is often called the Argentine theater street, comparable to Broadway in New York. On evenings, the sidewalks fill with people choosing between shows at the different venues along the avenue.
The theatre sits on one of the busiest stretches of Avenida Corrientes and is easy to reach on foot from several metro stations. Shows typically start in the evening, so arriving early gives you time to walk around the neighborhood beforehand.
The building houses the Academia del Broadway, a school where students can train in singing, jazz, and stage performance during the day. It is rare for students to be able to watch professional shows in the evening on the very stage where they rehearse.
