Teatro Metropolitan, Theater along Corrientes Avenue in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Teatro Metropolitan is a dual-purpose venue at Avenida Corrientes 1343 that hosts both theatrical productions and film screenings. The building houses multiple performance spaces, allowing different shows to run simultaneously throughout the week.

Designed by civil engineers Germán and J. B. Joselevich, E. Ramírez and Rafael Abril in Art Deco style, the Metropolitan opened around 1937 on land freed by the widening of Calle Corrientes. It began as the Cine-Teatro Metropolitan with a single 2,000-seat hall split between a stalls level and an upper gallery, reached through a lobby clad in Botticino marble. It was later subdivided as television and video weakened the cinema circuit; in 2013 Citi sponsored a renovation and renamed it Metropolitan Citi, and from 2023 it is again Teatro Metropolitan.

The venue regularly hosts productions by Argentine and international playwrights, many performed in Spanish for local audiences. The stage has become central to the neighborhood's cultural identity and draws both theater enthusiasts and cinema lovers.

The venue sits centrally on one of Buenos Aires' main theater streets and is easy to locate on foot. Visitors should check in advance what type of show is running, as the program alternates between theatrical productions and film screenings.

The stepped tower on the facade, which gives the building its silhouette from a distance, dates from the 1937 opening; the original single hall held 2,000 seats split between a stalls level and an upper gallery, both reached through a lobby clad in Botticino marble.
