Chalet de la avenida 9 de Julio, Historic chalet in San Nicolás, Argentina
The chalet is a French Norman residence located on the tenth floor of an office building in downtown Buenos Aires. It faces directly toward the Obelisk on 9 de Julio Avenue with its distinctive roofline extending above the surrounding structure.
Spanish immigrant Rafael Díaz built this elevated residence in 1927 to reduce travel time from his distant home in Banfield. The structure was completed nine years before the Obelisk was constructed nearby.
The structure displays French Norman design with steep roofing and a two-story layout plus attic space. This architectural style was typical of Mar del Plata and shapes how the building appears to visitors.
The building received cultural heritage status in 2014 and any structural modifications require approval from the Department of Culture. Access may be limited since the chalet sits within an office building in the city center.
The building once housed LOK Radio Mueblería Díaz, which later became Radio Rivadavia and played an early role in Argentine broadcasting. Few visitors today realize the structure served as a broadcasting hub during this formative period.
