Cerro Fortress, Military fortress on Cerro de Montevideo hill, Uruguay
The stone fortress stands 134 meters above sea level, featuring thick walls, defensive positions, and a lighthouse overlooking Montevideo Bay.
Governor Francisco Javier de Elío ordered the construction of this fortification in 1809, making it the last Spanish fort built in Uruguay.
The fortress houses the Military Museum General Artigas since 1939, displaying collections that document Uruguay's military history through artifacts and exhibitions.
Visitors can access the fortress daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with guided tours available in multiple languages at the entrance.
The fortress lighthouse sends three white flashes every ten seconds, reaching a distance of 19 nautical miles across the Río de la Plata.
