El Hotel del Prado, Cultural heritage monument in Prado neighborhood, Montevideo, Uruguay
El Hotel del Prado is a symmetrical building with a main hall and two side halls situated within the sprawling Prado Park grounds. Recent renovation added two new halls on the terrace level, creating additional space for hosting various events.
German architect Jules Knab won a municipal competition in 1908 and built the structure, which opened in 1912. The building was constructed on the foundations of a previous establishment called El Recreo del Prado.
The building served as a gathering place where Montevideo's wealthy residents attended social events, tea ceremonies, and gaming activities. This role made it a symbol of the refined customs that defined high society at the time.
The grounds are easily accessible through park pathways, and visitors can navigate the spacious layout without difficulty. Event spaces can accommodate various occasions, with flexible setup options depending on your specific needs.
Despite its name, the building never operated as a conventional hotel but served as an events center from the start. This distinction is rarely known today, yet it completely redefines what the place was actually meant to be.
