Liberty Building

Liberty Building is a concrete structure erected in the 1970s near central Montevideo that now serves as the headquarters of the State Health Services Administration. It houses orthopedic care facilities and administrative departments for medical programs.

The building was originally constructed in the 1970s for the Ministry of Defense. It then housed presidential offices from 1985 until 2008 before being converted to serve as a medical facility.

The surrounding park displays modern sculptures installed in 1996 that connect healthcare services with public art. This installation creates a space where medical facilities and artistic expression coexist for visitors to experience.

The building is located within walking distance of the city center and is easily accessible by public transportation. Visitors should note that administrative areas are separate from medical facilities, so checking your destination department beforehand is helpful.

The building underwent an unusual transformation from a defense facility to an administrative center and finally to a medical institution. This multiple repurposing reflects how structures in Uruguay have shifted their roles across decades.
