Democracy Square, Montevideo

Democracy Square sits at the junction of three major avenues in Tres Cruces, connecting Italy Avenue, Artigas Boulevard, and 8 de Octubre Avenue. The square functions as a central hub with direct access to the local bus terminal and shopping center.

Originally called Plaza de la Nacionalidad Oriental when created in 1978, the square was renamed in 1985 to mark Uruguay's return to democratic rule. This change reflected the nation's transition away from military governance.

A monument honoring those who suffered during the military dictatorship dominates the square with bronze kneeling figures that invite reflection. The memorial serves as a gathering space where people pause to pay respect.

An underground tunnel constructed in 1961 runs beneath the square's central area, linking 18 de Julio Avenue with 8 de Octubre Avenue. Most visitors pass by without noticing this hidden infrastructure that sees daily use.
