Museo del Fútbol Uruguayo

The Uruguayan Football Museum is located beneath the Olympic Grandstand at Centenario Stadium and displays a large collection of trophies, medals, and memorabilia from football history. The rooms are housed in an underground area of the stadium and give you a sense of how central this sport is to the nation.

The museum was founded in 1975 and preserves items from Uruguay's Olympic gold medals in 1924 and 1928 and World Cup victories in 1930 and 1950. These achievements occurred when the country was a center of sports development in South America.

The museum displays objects from the early days of South American football, including furniture used when officials from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile founded the continental federation in 1916. You can see how this region shaped professional sports and what role the country played in developing modern football.

The museum is accessible beneath the stadium and can be reached from Gate 13 near Ricaldoni Avenue. It opens on weekdays and allows enough time to comfortably view the collections.

FIFA recognized this museum in 1983 as the sole World Monument of Football History, a distinction no other place has received. This singular designation reflects the profound importance of the sport to the nation's identity.
