Antel Arena, Multi-purpose sports venue in Villa Española, Montevideo, Uruguay.
Antel Arena is a multi-purpose sports venue in the Villa Española neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay. Its flexible seating configuration allows for about ten thousand spectators during basketball games and up to fifteen thousand for concerts, with seating adjusted according to the type of event.
Construction began in May 2014 on the site of the former Cilindro Municipal, an older venue from the mid-20th century. The finished arena opened in November 2018, replacing the earlier building as the main facility for large events in the city.
The arena takes its name from the national telecommunications company and draws visitors from across the city for national basketball matches and international concerts. When the national team plays, the stands fill with fans who follow every move on the court and create a loud, animated atmosphere throughout the game.
Access is organized through multiple entrances that open depending on the type of event, allowing large crowds to enter smoothly. Visitors arriving by public transport should plan extra time, as the venue is some distance from the city center and waiting times can increase after major events.
The American company ASM Global operates the building to international standards and coordinates all events on site. The project cost around 118 million US dollars and was financed through an agreement between the telecommunications firm ANTEL and the city of Montevideo, with ANTEL securing operating rights for three decades.
