The institution began operations in 1860 when a house in Reducto transferred 28 patients, marking the start of Uruguay's first mental health facility.
The structure includes a Romanesque-style chapel with classical elements, positioned in front of the entrance vestibule serving both male and female residents.
The hospital maintains 300 beds and employs 610 staff members, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, administrators, and security personnel.
The facility divides into separate wings for men and women, each containing identical arrangements of dormitories, dining areas, and nursing services.
