Carrasco International Airport, International airport in Ciudad de la Costa, Uruguay
Carrasco International Airport is the primary hub for flights connecting Uruguay with the rest of the world, serving passengers through a terminal with eight gates. Travelers move through large open spaces where natural daylight enters through floor-to-ceiling windows and a curved overhead structure.
Operations began in 1947 with smaller facilities that expanded and modernized over the following decades. A completely new terminal replaced the older buildings in 2009 after a privately funded redevelopment led by the Puerta del Sur group.
The terminal building, created by Rafael Viñoly, represents modern Uruguayan architecture through its curved roof structure and natural light integration.
The airport sits about 19 kilometers (12 miles) east of downtown Montevideo and connects through regular taxis and bus routes. Main areas are clearly signposted and designed for easy movement, helping travelers find their way without difficulty.
The runways serve both commercial flights and aircraft from the adjacent General Cesáreo Berisso Air Force Base. This shared use allows both facilities to operate on the same surfaces, which is rather uncommon in the region.
