Hotel Carrasco, Historic hotel and casino in Carrasco, Uruguay

Hotel Carrasco is a luxury property featuring French architectural design situated along the Montevideo coastline, characterized by ornate ceilings, marble staircases, and expansive windows facing the Rio de la Plata. The building houses multiple guest rooms and suites, a casino, swimming facilities, wellness services, and several event venues.

Construction began in 1912 under architects Gastón Mallet and Swiss-born Jacques Dunant, but World War I halted work for nine years. The Municipality of Montevideo bought the unfinished building and inaugurated it on 29 January 1921. It was declared a National Historical Heritage in 1975, closed in 1997, and reopened on 7 March 2013 after renovation.

The hotel is named after Sebastián Carrasco, the first holder of these lands. Its restaurant, 1921, recalls the year of inauguration, and the Thays Lounge Bar honours the French-Argentine landscaper Carlos Thays, who designed the garden neighbourhood around it. The adjoining square and Rostand Street form a popular pedestrian zone.

The hotel stands on the Rambla de Montevideo in Carrasco, at the centre of the garden suburb laid out by Charles Thays and Édouard André. The casino occupies the basement, while the Thays Lounge Bar, the 1921 Restaurant and the spa are inside the main building. Rostand Street and the adjoining square beside the hotel form a pedestrian zone.

The hotel's name honours Sebastián Carrasco, the first holder of the lands where the neighbourhood rose. Its 1921 opening followed nine years of paralysis caused by World War I, after the Municipality of Montevideo bought the unfinished building and resumed the works. In 1975 it was declared a National Historical Heritage.
