Parque Roosevelt, Canelones, Cultural heritage park in Paso de Carrasco, Uruguay.
Parque Roosevelt is a large recreational park in Paso de Carrasco featuring eucalyptus trees, walking paths, playgrounds, and spaces for sports and leisure activities. The grounds include picnic areas, jogging trails, and various facilities designed for different age groups and interests.
Originally named Parque Nacional de Carrasco, it was Uruguay's first state park, established through a land donation from Alfredo García Lagos. This founding marked the beginning of a new approach to creating and protecting public recreational spaces in the country.
The park hosts the annual Criolla del Roosevelt folklore festival during Tourism Week, where gauchos demonstrate their skills and traditional music fills the grounds. Visitors can experience local customs and musical traditions that remain part of regional identity.
The park features wide, easily walkable paths with clear signage guiding visitors to different areas and facilities. It is advisable to wear weather-appropriate clothing as the grounds are open and exposed, with limited sheltered areas.
The park was shaped through systematic landscape work, including wetland drainage and large-scale tree planting with eucalyptus species. This project demonstrates how engineered green space became a beloved community gathering place.
