Pittamiglio Castle, Medieval castle in Punta Carretas, Montevideo, Uruguay
Pittamiglio Castle is a residential building with 23 towers and 54 rooms set along the Montevideo coast in Punta Carretas. The rooms connect through narrow corridors that create a maze-like layout blending medieval and Renaissance architectural styles.
Architect Humberto Pittamiglio designed and built this residence starting in 1910, working on it for decades. The long construction period allowed him to express his artistic and spiritual vision throughout the building.
The interior rooms display symbols connected to alchemy, Christianity, and Freemasonry, reflecting the architect's spiritual world. These symbolic elements are woven throughout the walls and decorations, shaping how each space looks and feels.
The property is open to visitors through guided tours on select days, allowing you to explore with expert explanation. An on-site restaurant and exhibition space make it easy to spend several hours discovering the building and its details.
The main facade displays a replica of the Victory of Samothrace sculpture created by an Italian-Uruguayan artist. This sculpture gazes toward the Rambla Mahatma Gandhi and surprises visitors with its prominent artistic presence on the coast.
