Parva Domus, Micronation and cultural association in Punta Carretas, Uruguay
Parva Domus is a neoclassical mansion with gardens and sculptures located at Bulevar General Artigas near Punta Carretas. The main building contains residential spaces, a theater, and various public areas surrounded by an extensive property.
The site began as a fishing club in 1878 and later transformed into a self-proclaimed republic with its own constitution. This evolution led to the creation of symbols including a flag, anthem, and presidential governance structure.
The name comes from Latin meaning "small house," reflecting the deliberately modest character of this place. Visitors can observe how the grounds serve as a theater and gallery during Heritage Days, where artists display works that celebrate local culture.
The property is located two blocks from the Sheraton Hotel and Punta Carretas Shopping Center, making it straightforward to reach. Visitors should note that access to the gardens and exhibition spaces is typically available only during Uruguay's Heritage Day events.
Despite limiting active citizenship to 250 male members at any time, the micronation has recorded over 843,000 total citizens throughout its existence, including prominent politicians and artists. This large number reflects how many people held membership over the decades before stricter modern rules took effect.
