San Carlos Centro, human settlement in Santa Fe Province, Argentina
San Carlos Centro is a small town in Las Colonias Department with a mix of older buildings and newer shops showing growth and change over time. The Plaza San Martín forms the center where families and friends gather, while the Templo San Carlos Borromeo with its traditional architecture also shapes the town's character.
The town was founded in 1858 by Carlos Beck Bernard and Swiss settlers, with French and Italian immigrants joining later. It developed from this wave of settlement and has preserved its craft traditions to this day, particularly in glassmaking and home to South America's only remaining bell foundry using ancient techniques.
San Carlos Centro is a place where craft traditions remain part of everyday life. Residents gather in the main square and share mate tea in their yards, traditions that reflect the community's connection to the past and to each other.
The town is easily explored on foot and has plenty of rest spots like parks and the Paseo Parque de la Ciudad to relax in. It makes sense to visit during daylight hours to see the craft workshops and market in full light and to speak with locals.
The town is home to South America's only remaining bell foundry that still uses the ancient lost-wax casting technique. This method, over three thousand years old, is performed by hand and shows a rare craft that has disappeared elsewhere.
